Advancing Sustainability in Kenyan Higher Education: The Role of University Managers in Promoting Sustainable Institutions in the Digital Era

About the training:

This National Multiplication Training (NMT) was designed to strengthen the capacity of university leaders in Kenya to drive sustainability transformations within higher education institutions. The programme focuses on integrating sustainability principles into institutional leadership, governance, teaching, research, and operations, while leveraging digital technologies to enhance impact. Delivered through a blended format—including virtual sessions, in-person workshops, mentorship, and project-based learning—the training emphasises practical application. Participants developed and implemented Project Action Plans (PAPs) aimed at catalysing sustainable change within their institutions. The training is aligned with global and national development priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Kenya Vision 2030, and promotes collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making in higher education.

Expected learning outcomes:

By the end of the training, participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate a strong understanding of sustainability principles and their relevance to higher education leadership and national development priorities,
• Integrate sustainability into institutional policies, curricula, research, and operational practices,
• Build and strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders, including government, industry, and communities,
• Apply digital tools and innovative technologies to support sustainability initiatives,
• Design and implement effective Project Action Plans (PAPs) to drive sustainable transformation within their institutions.

Target group:

The training targeted academic leaders in Kenyan universities, including:

• Deans and Associate/Deputy Deans,
• Heads of Departments,
• Directors of academic or research units,
• Coordinators of academic programmes.

Participants were expected to be in leadership roles, committed to institutional change, and willing to design and implement sustainability-focused projects within their universities.

• Workshop 1: 23rd to 26th March 2026 (Chuka University)
• Workshop 2: 20th to 23rd July 2026 (JOOUST)
